MARCUS GARVEY PARK ALLIANCE

The historic Fire Watchtower in Marcus Garvey Park is a beloved fixture in the Harlem community. Unfortunately, it is in imminent danger of collapse.  Although the tower is a city and national landmark, the community must make its wishes for the future of the tower known if it is to survive for generations to come.  Two months ago, the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance convened a Community Visioning Session at which participants began a conversation about the  features they would like to see in a refurbished tower and redesigned Acropolis (plaza on which the tower stands). An idea offered at the Visioning Session was to hold tours of the Acropolis and Fire Watchtower so that various segments of the community could become familiar with the space and its numerous, wonderful possibilities for development.  One of the communities that we'd like to engage is the arts and culture community.  We would also like your feedback as to how the space can be used for artistic and cultural performances and events.  We are inviting you and other people in the arts community to come take a tour on Sunday, July 21st at 1 PM.

The tour will be led by Mr. Angel Ayon, the foremost authority on the Fire Watchtower. Please meet us in front of the Pelham Fritz Recreation Center at Mt. Morris Park West (one block east of Lenox/Malcolm X) at 122nd Street.  RSVP to valbradley@aol.com
