Community Advisory Council. Artist Spotlight: Nicky Enright and Ivan Velez
Nicky Enright is an artist, DJ, and educator whose
multimedia work explores the intersection of image and sound, the construction
of identity, the theory and practice of borders, and the way language
functions.He has executed numerous public commissions for clients
such as the MTA Arts for Transit (NY), the Smithsonian Institution, and NASA
(Washington DC).He has a BFA from The Cooper Union, an MFA from
Hunter College, and he is an alumni of the AIM Program at the Bronx
Museum.Born in Ecuador, he lives and works in the Bronx, NY.www.Lightbolt.net
Ivan
Velez
Raised in West Farms,
Ivan was heavily influenced by the chop-socky karate flicks,Astro
Boycartoons, blaxploitation films, Spanish soap operas, and Silver
Age comic books.His work has been published in Gay Comics,Details,
Dutton, Milestone, Marvel, Vertigo and DC Comics and reviewed in theAdvocate,Edge,
theVillage Voice, theNew York Timesand on NPR.
His best work is Tales of the Closet, a groundbreaking comic book series
about a group of urban gay youth. As one of the first Latino writers to
work for the mainstream comics industry, his work is known for its
multiculturalism and this sensitivity helps him push the envelope. He is
currently a teaching artist for the New York and Queens Public Libraries as
well as the Bronx Museum of the Arts. He hosts OSO ORO, an international 'bear'
art event and his work has been exhibited in several galleries throughout the
United States.
