Archive (BGLA) Film Series
In The
Polymath, or The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany,
Gentleman, documentarian Fred Barney Taylor crafts a fascinating
portrait of Samuel R. Delany, an award-winning, African-American gay
author whose credits include everything from science fiction to
several issues of the Wonder Woman comic book. Using a range of
experimental techniques and borrowed footage from Delany's home
movies, Taylor captures his subject's thoughts on racism and
violence, and his struggles with sexual identity. Please join us for

Rhythms of Resistance
Utilizing assorted drums,
cymbals, tambourines, and marimbas, as well as the body percussion
rhythms of shout, juba and jive, master percussionist David Pleasant
will illustrate how these forms of communication helped forge a
language of resistance against slavery. Don't miss this master
musician, storyteller, and trailblazer in African and Gullah/Geechee
traditions. Grades 4 and up.
