Join ELNYA and distinguished panelists in a discussion about Art in Alternative Spaces. From empty warehouses, storefronts and repurposed housing, to pop-up campers and city sidewalks, artists are getting creative about the spaces in which they live, build and present their work. Learn about their strategies of success for sustainable art making in the city and hear from key organizations that focus on the advocacy, development and implementation of these ideas. You don’t want to miss this!

About the Moderator
Suzanne Bocanegra is an artist living and working in New York City. Her recent work involves large-scale performance and installation, frequently translating two-dimensional information, images and ideas from the past into three-dimensional scenarios for staging, movement, ballet, and music.

About the Panelists
Anita Durst is Artistic Director at chashama which nurtures artists by transforming unused property into ‘space to create’.

Shawn McLearen is VP, Properties, at Artspace whose mission is to create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations.

Zach Morris is a Bessie Award-winning director and choreographer and Co-Director of Third Rail Projects, a New York City-based multi-disciplinary company dedicated to reframing performance and bringing art to the public through an array of media and within a variety of contexts.

Debra Simon is Vice President and Artistic Director at Arts Brookfield which invigorates public spaces through the presentation of free cultural experiences in Brookfield Office Properties’ premier buildings around the world.

Paul Parkhill is Executive Director at Spaceworks, a nonprofit real estate organization dedicated to expanding the supply of long-term, affordable rehearsal and studio space for artists in New York City.
