HAA At A Glance: First Seven Years

By increasing the exposure of its membership through our collaborative programming, HAA bridges gaps between artists and major arts institutions, amplifying the unique voices of our member artists and expanding the conversations surrounding their work.

HAA is a primary source for information dissemination, provides workshops, and produces a number of showcase and presentation  programs featuring the work of its members.


·         Received Emerging Organization grant from JP Morgan Chase Foundation

·         Appointed to September 11th Recovery Fund grant committee and hosted two workshops

·         Advocated for funding artists and organizations impacted by September 11th

·         Produced showcase of HAA members at Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture


·         Received Arts & Business Council technical assistance grant

·         Collaborated with NYFA and received a $100,000 grant from Rockefeller Foundation that was distributed to arts organizations & artists after September 11

·         With NYFA, coordinated & established Leadership Circles, a series of workshops to train arts  

·         Showcased HAA members during Harlem Week and Collaborated with the Theater at Riverside Church for outdoor family arts festival


·         Received grants from Harlem School of the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, Department of  Cultural Affairs, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Ford Foundation

·         Film screening with Black Programmer's Consortium at Columbia University's Miller Theater

·         HAA member showcases at Black Expo, Harlem Week, and the Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement outdoor arts festival

·         Co-hosted town hall meetings at Apollo Theater re: Salman Rushdies's "Midnight Children"

·         Awarded $50,000 in grants to HAA members


It all started when…

The Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA) was founded in 2001, led by our Chairman Voza Rivers a local, national and international impresario for the Advancement of Arts and Culture whose experience includes Award Winning Production of Theater, Film, Music and Live Events.  
As the only arts service organization of its kind in Harlem HAA is committed to nurturing the artistic growth and development of artists and arts organizations based in Harlem and its surrounding communities.

At the core, HAA has cultivated a dynamic membership base artists and arts organizations. HAA plays an essential role in the lives of emerging and established artists by helping build the resources, networks, and capacity of its richly diverse membership.

·         Partners with the Asian American Arts Alliance, the Association of Hispanic Arts, the Bronx Council on  the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Queens Council on the Arts to form Urban Artists  
Initiative, a consortium of New York City service organizations in an effort to build capacity and support  
for artists of color

·         Produces member showcase during Harlem Week


·         Receives $250,000 grant from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone

·         Hires Executive Director

·         Host first annual Artz, Rootz, and Rhythm Festival on the plaza of the ACP, Jr. State Office Building

·         Establishes the Greater Harlem Benefit Fund with Commerce Bank


·         Presents a special Black History Month program at the New York Society for Ethical Culture

·         Receives a grant from the Council of the City of New York ($119,797) and the Department of Youth and Community Development CASA Grant for after-school programming ($25,000)

·         Re-grants $25,000 to artists of color through the Urban Artists Initiative (UAI)


·         Council member Inez Dickens designates HAA manager of Cultural Collaborative re-grants program for Harlem-based cultural organizations

·         Receives City Council member-item allocation from Inez Dickens administered through NYC Department of Cultural Affairs

·         Receives $750,000 grant from Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone
